The Chapel Hill Girls Basketball team ended its regular season in typical fashion—a perfect conference record.

Sherry Norris’ Tigers defeated Cardinal Gibbons 54-38 to finish 14-0 in the Big Eight Conference, its second straight perfect regular season. The Tigers have won 3 straight conference championships.

It was a fitting end to the Chapel Hill senior class, which has lost just six games in its four-year career, has won two regional championships and earned the 2014 3-A state championship. Senior Raziyah Farrington, who surpassed the 1,000-point mark earlier this year, finished with 20 points. Farrington is headed to play basketball at Western Carolina. Tamia Eatmon scored nine.

Chapel Hill will start the first round of the Big 8 Conference Tournament at home on Monday night against Northern Vance at 6 o’clock.

In the boys game, Cardinal Gibbons defeated Chapel Hill 61-48, earning Gibbons a share of the Big 8 regular season championship. Justin Reid led Gibbons with 26 points. Chapel Hill coach Bill Walton says his team just couldn’t find the range.

“We couldn’t score the ball,” said Walton. “They run good trap sets and stuff. We knew we couldn’t get behind early because they were going to be patient and execute their stuff. And we couldn’t make any shots. We had a tough time scoring.”

Brian Thornton led Chapel Hill with 16 points, the only Tiger in double figures. If the Tigers had upset the Crusaders, it would have given Orange the Big 8 Conference regular season championship. Instead, the Panthers must defeat cross-town rival Cedar Ridge on Friday night to claim its share of the title.

Chapel Hill will play again Monday at home in the first round of the Big 8 Tournament. Walton says it’s a very competitive league.

“This whole conference is about matchups,” said Walton, currently in his first season. “We couldn’t do anything with Orange because of the matchups. Gibbons is tough because of their matchups. The problem for us against Gibbons is we have a tough time staying patient. We haven’t been disciplined enough to run our stuff and score.”

Orange faces Cedar Ridge tonight in Red Wolves Gymnasium. Our coverage on 97.9 WCHL begins at 6:30 with Above the Rim with Adam Moore and Matt Aug. We’ll go live to Hillsborough for the Panthers versus the Red Wolves starting at 7. We will also carry the game live on Chapelboro.com.
