WINSTON-SALEM – Just as it did to open the regular season, the No. 1 North Carolina baseball team shut out its opponent Friday night in its ACC opener. The Tar Heels took down the Wake Forest Demon Deacons 4-0 in Winston-Salem.

Junior Kent Emanuel pitched a shutout and allowed five hits, no runs, three walks, and threw seven strikeouts.

Only four Tar Heels saw a hit Friday night and freshman right fielder Skye Bolt once again led the way. With a 1-0 lead in the top of the third, Bolt connected for his first homerun of the season. He scored the first run of the game as well after walking in the top of the second.

With a 2-0 lead, Carolina added two security runs in the top of the sixth. Wake Forest helped with the scoring as sophomore second baseman Mike Zolk reached on a throwing error which scored senior first baseman Cody Stubbs who reached on a walk. Zolk later scored on a triple by junior catcher Matt Roberts.

With the win, UNC improved to 12-0, 1-0 in the ACC; Wake fell to 9-6, 0-1.

Game two of the ACC-opening series for North Carolina and Wake Forest continues Saturday at 4:00 p.m. in Winston Salem.
