C’mon, people, it wasn’t that slow of a news night.
Frankly, I cannot believe how much play the Rick Pitino incident at halftime Wednesday night got. And with Duke losing at the buzzer, Butler stunning second-ranked Villanova and Kansas winning its 13th consecutive Big 12 regular season, there was plenty for the lead story than a fan yelling, “Pitino, you suck!”
Various shots of the video on TV and phone cameras swept across the Internet, and I thought the headline should have been, “See, UNC doesn’t have a cheese and wine crowd anymore.” Plus, “You suck” has become such a common phrase in the American lexicon these days that it is used in a popular car commercial, as is this particular model “doesn’t suck.”
Pitino may have been projecting halftime feelings about his own team toward the fan sitting in one of the fat cat baseline chairs behind the home basket. His team truly sucked shooting the ball from three-point range and foul line, where they were 0 for 9. The way the Cardinals were manhandling Carolina inside with their speed and athleticism, they should have been up 13 instead of down three.
Isn’t interacting with the opposing team and coach and the refs part of the price of buying a front row seat, from Spike Lee at Madison Square Garden to the fan doing the bump with Stephen Curry the other night? Is UNC going to precede the teams taking the court at the Carolina-Duke Senior Night with the pronouncement, “Ladies and Gentlemen, please treat Mike Krzyzewski and the Blue Devils with the utmost of respect.” Fat chance on that.
If that’s the worst Rick Pitino has heard in his 30 years of coaching, he hasn’t been listening very closely. Doesn’t he play every other year at Rupp Arena, where he used to coach the Kentucky Wildcats? I bet “You Suck!” is the nicest thing he hears from the bluegrass crowd. Ol’ Roy acted like it was the worst he had ever heard in his home gym. Heck, I heard him use that same word about his own guys this season, although thankfully they “can’t afford to suck” would be better now.
It’s all fake news. Terrible. Bad. Sad.
