Will the Olympic Games survive a chaotic Rio de Janeiro?

The top ten stories coming out of Rio on the eve of the Summer Olympic Games are all bad news, and the Zika virus that apparently has run its course is way down the list as a threat to athletes and visitors to Brazil. So far the best story is back in the U.S., where the 83-year-old son of Olympic legend Jim Thorpe is still fighting to have his father’s remains returned to his native Oklahoma from a tourist town in Pennsylvania named, well, Jim Thorpe.

Anyway, the New York Times reports that the athletes competing in the scenic Guanabara Bay had better not swallow any of the water because the lingering problem of raw sewage has created a toxic stew of sorts that could make them deathly ill. And that’s the New York Times, mind you. ESPN, after the Thorpe story, leads with the plight of the Olympic Village where hundreds of apartments are without water and power and several countries are refusing to let their athletes check in. Currently, Rio is looking to import 350 plumbers and electricians to fix the mess.

Next, a depleted Russian team departed for Rio on Thursday, missing dozens of athletes who were excluded amid the country’s doping scandal. Team members left on a charter flight from Moscow’s International Airport for Brazil, where more than 100 of what was originally a 387-member team have been barred from competing in Rio by international sports federations under sanctions that most Russian athletes consider unfair.

The saddest story from American soil is that TV broadcaster Craig Sager is back under treatment for Leukemia and will not make the trip to Rio or appear on any studio shows from the states. The Olympic torch, which will be carried through the streets before the opening ceremonies, was extinguished in the wake citizens being killed for opposing the rancid and scorching working conditions as the city and country try to complete facilities.

After that come some good, heartwarming stories about the athletes, themselves, but will we ever see or hear them?
