Bad week if you were pulling for Hillary and the Heels.

Just as most Dems woke up on 11/9 wondering what the hell happened to their supposed landslide, Carolina alumni and fans awoke on Veterans Day asking how a veteran team lost to the ACC-winless Dukies who outplayed and outcoached UNC all night.

After putting two quick scores on the board in the first quarter, the Tar Heels could not get out of their own way for the rest of the game. They never again solved Duke’s defense, and their own defense let a red-shirt quarterback who has had an erratic freshman year outplay NFL-bound (someday) Mitch Trubisky. Daniel “The Future” Jones, who looks like his destiny has arrived early, out-passed and clearly outran glamour-boy quarterback in the light blue.

The Carolina coaches are likely still trying to figure out how Jones kept getting free on the flanks while Shaun Wilson rushed for 107 yards compared to Elijah Hood’s 75. Larry Fedora’s offense never adjusted to Duke’s adjustments after the Tar Heels lost a 14-0 lead. Trubisky ended the game trying to throw the ball out of bounds but instead threw a perfect strike to a Duke defender.

The embarrassing loss to an arch rival that was 3-6 and 0-5 in the ACC coming in turns what could have been another great regular season into one that, at best, could wind up 9-3 if Carolina doesn’t fall asleep against The 9-0 Citadel and let another arch rival save its season in the finale against N.C. State.

Tar Heels fans, like Hillary’s horde, were thinking about a big celebration that could have ended in the Orange Bowl. Now they will be lucky to get into the Belk Bowl, given the egg they laid on Senior Night at Duke. Their vaunted offense managed two field goals in the second half, stopping itself on several other possessions.

They seemed to show poor clock management down the stretch and made mental errors like not (fair) catching Duke’s short quick kick and letting the ball bounce inside the 10-yard line.

The upsets of Tuesday and Thursday happened because one team had a better night. Clearly, Carolina did not deserve to win on this night.
