NCAA East Semifinal (Sweet 16)

  • Carolina is now 31-6 overall this season and 115-44 all-time in NCAA Tournament play.
  • Carolina is now 26-8 in the regional semifinals (called the Sweet 16 since 1975), including 7-1 under head coach Roy Williams.
  • The Tar Heels advance to the regional final for the 26th time. Carolina is 18-7 in regional finals, including 3-3 under head coach Roy Williams.
  • Carolina scored 101 points, the most it has ever scored in a regional semifinal game. The previous UNC high for points in a regional semifinal (Sweet 16) game was 98 vs. Gonzaga in 2009 in Memphis.
  • Carolina is the first team to score 100 points in a regional semifinal since Kentucky beat Indiana, 102-90, in 2012.
  • Tonight was the 12th time in NCAA Tournament play the Tar Heels have scored 100 or more points. It was the second time this season in any game (106 at Florida State) and the 51st time under Roy Williams (UNC is 50-1 under Williams when scoring 100).
  • The Tar Heels are 53-10 as a No. 1 seed.
  • This was the second time this season the Tar Heels shot at least 50 percent from the floor, 50 percent from 3FG and 75 percent from the free throw line. UNC shot 51.6 percent from the floor, 55.0 percent from FG and 78.8 percent from the line. The other game was Pitt on 2/20 when UNC shot .593/.533/.867.
  • This was the first time UNC shot at least 50 percent from the floor, 50 percent from 3FG and 75 percent from the free throw line in an NCAA Tournament game since the 1997 East Regional final against Louisville (Coach Smith’s final win as UNC’s head coach). UNC shot .559/.500/.833 in that 97-74 win over the Cardinals.
  • Head coach Roy Williams is second in all-time NCAA Tournament wins with 68. Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski is first with 90.
  • Williams is 68-23 in NCAA Tournament play, including 34-9 at Carolina.
  • Williams is 781-208 in 28 seasons as a head coach. The 781 wins are the 10th-most Division I wins all-time. He passed Lute Olson with the win over Indiana.
  • Carolina made a season-high 11 three-pointers (previous 10 vs. Tulane). That ties the second-most three-pointers by UNC in an NCAA Tournament game and is the most since 11 vs. Villanova in the 2013 second round. UNC’s record in an NCAA Tournament game is 12 vs. Oakland in 2005. This is the fourth time UNC has made 11 (also vs. Villanova in 2013, Villanova in 2009 national semifinal and vs. Gonzaga in 2009 regional semifinal).
  • Tonight marked the 26th time UNC has attempted 20 or more three-pointers in an NCAA Tournament game. The Tar Heels shot 55.0 percent (11 of 20), the highest percentage in school history for at least 20 attempts in an NCAA Tournament game. The previous high was 52.4 percent (11 for 21 vs. Villanova in 2013).
  • The Tar Heels are 12-0 this year when they attempt 20 or more three-pointers.
  • Carolina is 10-1 this year when it makes at least seven three-pointers.
  • Carolina shot 51.6 percent from the floor vs. Indiana. The Tar Heels are now 20-1 this season when shooting at least 50 percent from the floor for the game.
  • Carolina shot 62.1 percent from the floor in the first half. That is the seventh time Carolina has shot 60 percent from the floor in a half this season. The Tar Heels are 7-0 when they shoot 60 percent from the floor in a half.
  • Carolina shot 60 percent from the floor for the second half in a row (shot 60.7 percent in the second half vs. Providence).
  • Indiana shot 41 percent from the floor. That’s the 28th consecutive game the Tar Heels have held the opponents to under 45 percent shooting from the floor.
  • Marcus Paige led five Tar Heel starters in double figures with 21 points. The Tar Heels are 15-1 this year when at least five players score in double figures.
  • The Tar Heels scored 101 points, the 24th time in 37 games this season UNC scored 80 or more points. The Tar Heels are now 23-1 when scoring at least 80 points this year.

 

PLAYERS

  • First-team All-America forward Brice Johnson scored 20 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. It was his 22nd double-double of the season (32 career). That ties the most double-doubles in Carolina single-season history with Billy Cunningham, who had 22 in 1964.
  • Carolina is 19-3 this year when Johnson has a double-double.
  • Johnson had his seventh 20-point/10-rebound game of the season.
  • Johnson scored in double figures for the 34th time this year.
  • Johnson has 387 rebounds this year. He passed Billy Cunningham (379 in 1964) for fourth place in UNC single-season history. He is 12 behind Tyler Hansbrough, 10 behind Sean May and two behind Antawn Jamison.
  • Johnson became the eighth Tar Heel to grab 1,000 career rebounds. He passed Brad Daugherty (1,003) for seventh place and is tied with Mitch Kupchak for sixth place with 1,006.
  • The Indiana game was the 145th game of Johnson’s college career. He is tied for second in UNC history with Danny Green behind only Deon Thompson (152).
  • Johnson made 10 of 12 free throws. It was the third time this year he made at least 10 free throws in a game (11 vs. Florida State and Wake Forest).
  • Johnson blocked three shots and has 21 career blocks in NCAA Tournament play. That ties the fourth-most by a Tar Heel all-time.
  • Marcus Paige made a season-high six three-pointers and tied the UNC record for most three-pointers in an NCAA Tournament. Shammond Williams also hit six vs. UNC Charlotte in a 1998 second round game in Hartford.
  • Paige has hit a UNC-record 290 three-pointers in his career. He passed Robert O’Kelley of Wake Forest (288) and Jack McClinton of Miami (286) tonight for 12th place in ACC history.
  • Tonight was the third time in his career Paige has hit six or more three-pointers in a game (seven at NC State and six vs. Richmond in 2014).
  • Paige is 11 for 21 (.524) from three-point range in the three NCAA Tournament games this season.
  • Paige has made 30 three-pointers in 10 career NCAA Tournament games. That is the second-most by a Tar Heel in NCAA Tournament history. Donald Williams, the 1993 Final Four MVP, holds the record by a Tar Heel with 38. Paige passed Danny Green (25), Shammond Williams (28) and Wayne Ellington (28) with his six 3FGs vs. the Hoosiers.
  • Paige scored a team-high 21 points. It was his 91st career game in double figures (21st this year), his 21st career 20-point game (fourth this year) and the 33rd time in his career he has led UNC in scoring (sixth this season).
  • Paige also had six assists and no turnovers. The Tar Heels are now 10-0 this season when Paige has five or more turnovers and 9-3 when he makes at least three 3FGs.
  • Paige has 1,797 career points. He passed Michael Jordan for 12th place in UNC history in career scoring (Jordan had 1,788). Bob Lewis is 11th with 1,836.
  • Paige passed Sam Perkins for second in minutes played since 1980. Paige has 4,468. Only Ed Cota played more (4,631) since 1980 when minutes were officially recorded by the ACC.
  • Kennedy Meeks scored 15 points and had nine rebounds. It was his highest point total since he had 23 against NC State on 1/16. He had six points combined in the first two NCAA Tournament games.
  • Meeks was 5 for 7 from the free throw line. That’s his most made free throws and attempts since he went 5 for 7 against Temple in the season opener on 11/13/15.
  • Joel Berry scored in double figures (14) for the 32nd time this year. UNC is 30-2 when he does. Berry scored all 14 of his points in the second half.
  • Joel Berry had five assists, most since he had six at Boston College on 2/9.
  • Justin Jackson scored 13 of his 14 points in the first half. It was his 26th time this year in double figures and the sixth time in as many games that he has scored in double figures in the NCAA Tournament over the last two seasons.
