If you want it all – and you want it within walking distance – Southern Village might be your kind of neighborhood. The designers of the popular community just two miles from downtown Chapel Hill seem to have thought of everything.
Although Southern Village is one of Chapel Hill’s newer neighborhoods, it is designed to be similar to what neighborhoods were generations ago. Tree-lined streets and sidewalks, covered front porches, and traditional architecture gives the area the feel of an historic district – and a true neighborhood.

The Village Green is a key component of the Southern Village community concept. It’s frequently the site of neighborhood gatherings, such as the annual N.C. Symphony concert, the Southern Village farmers market (every Thursday through October), and outdoor movies presented by Southern Village’s theater, the Lumina, Friday and Saturday nights at dusk during the summer.
The Southern Village Racquet and Swim Club offers residents an optional membership that provides access to tennis facilities year-round. They provide lessons for adults and children, team play, national tournaments and socials. For recreational swimmers, the club pool is open from early May through late summer. Competitive swimmers can join the top-notch Stingray swim team, one of the largest teams in the Chapel Hill Swim League.
A basketball court and ballfields adjacent to the club are available to all Southern Village residents, as are fitness classes, including yoga, pilates, kettlebells, dance and martial arts, which are offered in the upstairs clubhouse. This space is also available for private parties.
The extensive amenities within Southern Village bring incredible convenience to residents; a church, schools, restaurants, shopping, medical offices, and professional services are all offered within a short walk of most homes. But when residents do venture out, its excellent location serves them well. Bike trails connect the area. Public transportation is readily available, allowing for easy access to the nearby UNC campus (including bus service to Carolina football and basketball games) and downtown Chapel Hill, as well as other parts of the Triangle.
Even the area architecture is designed to foster a neighborly feel. Many of the homes feature large front porches, so conversations happen naturally. Garages are set in the rear of houses, along alleyways, allowing for an attractive streetscape. Parks, playgrounds and other public spaces are interspersed throughout the community, and it’s near the new Southern Park and dog park.
