Established in the 1950’s and into the 1980’s, the Lake Forest neighborhood in Chapel Hill is one of the most sought after neighborhoods in town.

Located in the heart of Chapel Hill, Lake Forest is built around Chapel Hill’s largest lake and features 40 lakefront homes. The neighborhood is great for walking, running and bird watching, and when the area gets that rare winter snow day, the park at Eastwood Lake is the place to be for sledding of all ages. The area is perfect for raising a family, and provides a slew of outdoor options where children can play together and explore nature.

The Lake Forest neighborhood is centrally located in Chapel Hill and is flanked by Coker Hills and Booker Creek subdivisions. Whole Foods, the Chapel Hill Public Library, Starbucks, and Trader Joes are all within walking distance. And Lake Forest is the perfect place for the golf enthusiast, as Finley Golf course is less than three miles away. Duke University Golf Club and Hillandale Golf Course provide two more outstanding public courses within nine miles of the neighborhood, and four other private courses can be found within the same distance.

The pristine Eastwood Lake offers canoeing, kayaking and sailing. In addition to the “lakeside” events, Lake Forest also has an active Garden Club with programs from September to May. After you fully pay your dues and assessments, you are classified as a participating member of the Lake Forest Association (LFA) and Participating Members can use the lake and park, or all the other assets, activities, and services of the association, including access to the beach on Eastwood Lake.

The neighborhood has a nice range of housing styles, from ranch and traditional to contemporary and estates. Many homes have had updates and additions, and it’s one of the few neighborhoods in Chapel Hill where homes have been torn down and rebuilt due to the high value of lake front property.

Lake Forest homes are currently selling in a range from $300,000 to $2 million and up, and the neighborhood features lots ranging from 0.3-1.7 acres. With excellent upkeep and constant improvements from the residents and the Lake Forest Association, property values should continue to rise.

Lake Forest is in the Estes Hills Elementary, Phillips Middle and East Chapel Hill High School District, part of the Chapel Hill-Carrboro school system that is considered one of the best in the nation. Consistently ranking at the top of the state in student testing, the system also boasts the lowest dropout rate in the state.

If you’re looking for a neighborhood with a private, secluded feel that is still just a short commute from all the amenities the city of Chapel Hill has to offer, Lake Forest may be the place for you.
