UNC Approves ‘Golden Handcuff’ for AD Bubba Cunningham

The UNC Board of Governors voted on Friday to extend a program previously reserved for the system president and university chancellors to UNC – Chapel Hill athletic director Bubba Cunningham. As part of the next round of contract negotiations, UNC – Chapel Hill will be allowed to offer Cunningham $200,000 per year in deferred compensation into a board-approved retirement account. UNC Reinstates Allen Artis to Football Team

Linebacker Allen Artis was reinstated to the UNC football team on Thursday, after misdemeanor charges for sexual battery and assault against a female student were dismissed. Artis was arrested last fall after playing in two games for the Tar Heels, which led to his indefinite suspension from the team. The events that led to the arrest happened in February of 2016. However, Artis claimed he and the woman had consensual sex and that there was no wrongdoing. UNC Athletics Posts 82 Percent Graduation Success Rate

Data released by the NCAA on Tuesday covering the cohort of academic years 2006-2009 showed that UNC posted a Graduation Success Rate of 82 percent during that time. This measurement looks at student-athlete graduation rates by team, and takes into account student-athletes who are on scholarship their first year and graduate from their respective university–or transfer to another university or professional opportunities while in good academic standing. While the national GSR average–across all sports–is 84 percent, UNC had seven of its teams score 100 percent in their respective GSRs. UNC athletics director Bubba Cunningham has received a pay bump after it appeared Cunningham was ready to move to the University of Florida in early September. The News & Observer is citing a university record that was released on Friday in reporting Cunningham’s salary has been increased to $705,853 annually. Sources close to both athletic departments have confirmed a USA Today report that UNC’s Bubba Cunningham agreed to become the new athletics director at the University of Florida in August but changed his mind as the deal was to be announced in Gainesville, Florida.
