Power outages impacted hundreds of people in Orange County Wednesday.

Orange County Emergency Services officials report that 2,000 Orange County residents were without power as 7:30 Wednesday evening after thunderstorms ripped through Orange County.

According to Duke Energy’s Outage Map, the biggest outage in Chapel Hill was near Martin Luther King Blvd and Hillsborough St.  In this area, about 1,400 customers did not have power.

The Town of Chapel Hill previously reported that traffic lights were also out in that area.

Also in Chapel Hill, another 25 customers experienced a power outage near Estes Dr and Clayton Dr.

The power outages also impacted Chapel Hill Town Hall.  As a result, Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools’ Board of Orange County Commissioners forum was postponed.

In Carrboro, approximately 80 customers did not have power near W. Main St and Hwy 54.

In Durham County, the number of customers without power was more than 2,000.

The Town of Chapel Hill reported that four roadways were closed due to trees blocking traffic – Cobb Terrace, Kenmore near Shady Lawn, Fordham near Eastowne Drive and Homestead Road past Northern Park Drive. Officials say crews were working to clear the roadways.

A severe thunderstorm knocked down trees and power lines on Wednesday afternoon.  In addition to causing power outages, fallen trees and debris impacted traffic.
