ORANGE COUNTY – Jim Groves, Director of Orange County Emergency Services, said Thursday evening that the number of 911 calls had lessened compared to Wednesday when the first wave of this winter weather was pounding Orange County.
The Chapel Hill Police Department told WCHL News Wednesday that the 911 call center was overloaded with calls and asked people involved in minor fender benders with no injuries to wait to report incidents till Thursday.
OC EMS activated a second phone line number, 919-245-6111, for people to reach the department and get information.
“A lot of what we try to do is to get the word out. We ask people to try to be prepared and have a plan and to make sure they have alternate power or things like that. If something bad happens, our job is to respond to it immediately.”
Due to the fact that water/snow on the roads will refreeze, adding another layer of ice, Groves said we are not out of danger yet.
Groves advised Orange County residents to stay at home if possible and check on relatives and friends, especially those who live alone or are elderly.
