RALEIGH- For the first time in three years, no area of North Carolina is experiencing a drought or abnormally dry conditions.

The chairman of the N.C. Drought Management Advisory Council credits Tropical Storm Andrea and several other storm systems for the relief from the dry conditions. Andrea helped eliminate lingering abnormally dry conditions in eastern North Carolina.

The last time the U.S. Drought Monitor showed neither drought nor abnormally dry conditions in North Carolina was the week of April 20, 2010.

National Weather Service meteorologist Michael Moneypenny says rainfall is less reliable in the summer months, however. State Climate Office director Ryan Boles says winter climate conditions can be predicted months in advance, but summer weather cannot so there’s no way to know when or if dry conditions will return.
