CHAPEL HILL -In light of the attention UNC has recently received surrounding sexual assault, members of the student government are working on a new Smartphone app that will allow members of the university community to report incidents of sexual violence.

Student Body President Christy Lambden says he and other student representatives are in brainstorming about what kinds of Smartphone apps might be able to best address all types of safety issues on campus, including those that are sexual in nature.

“Student government has been working on a university-wide app that will have a safety element to it,” Lambden said. “My hope is that it will be implemented by the end of my term in office.”

Sexual assault has been at the forefront of UNC’s radar since 2012, when the ex-boyfriend of student Landen Gambill faced a university panel on charges related to sexual misconduct against her. At the beginning of 2013, Gambill filed a complaint to the U.S. Department of Education Office for Civil Rights, alleging that UNC officials and the Honor Court had mishandled her case. Several others were also part of that claim, including former UNC assistant Dean Melinda Manning, who stepped down at the end of 2012.

In response to the controversy surrounding sexual assault, UNC administrators have formed a new task force charged with reviewing the university’s policies on the issue. The task force held its first official meeting earlier this month.

Right now, Lambden says the plans surrounding an Smartphone app are still in the early stages, and no definite decisions have been made.

“So I think there are number of different plans going on and it’s up to us to discover what will be the most viable,” he said.

In the meantime, the task force on sexual assault is scheduled to meet weekly throughout the summer, with no definite ending date.
