CHAPEL HILL – The UNC campus is once again mourning over the loss of one of its students.

The death of 22-year-old Stedman Gage is the fourth in the last six months that has shocked the University.

In early September, 19-year-old Faith Hedgepeth was found murdered in her apartment—a case that to this day is still unsolved; in early October, 21-year-old Trevor Dolan died of what his friends told the Daily Tar Heel was a suicide; and in late October, 18-year-old David Shannon was found dead at a concrete plant in Carrboro after falling off some of its machinery.

While an autopsy won’t be performed until Monday, police officials have said they don’t believe foul play was involved. As in most cases, a toxicology report will likely be requested by the coroner, which means a conclusive answer may not be delivered right away.

A statement from the Gage family says, “This is a devastating tragedy, and our family is handling the situation as best we can. We are heartbroken. We ask for your compassion and respect, for our privacy and that of our son.”

Stedman was the son of former UNC Board of Governors Chair and current board member Hannah Gage.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
