UNC is taking steps to step up campus safety after a kidnapping near campus last Friday night.

The kidnapping was thwarted when bystanders intervened and the suspect fled.

An Alert Carolina message sent from Chancellor Carol Folt, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Winston Crisp and Department of Public Safety Director Jeff McCracken called the incident “deeply alarming and unsettling for all of us.”

The message says Carolina will permanently increase foot patrols to enhance the presence and visibility of officers to monitor activity and safety in the downtown business district Thursday through Saturday nights.

A university working group is conducting a comprehensive review of “the adequacy of existing campus and community lighting, nighttime transportation options, smartphone applications, and enhanced awareness, training and communication.”

The message went on to say that the possibility exists of a campus-wide system of DPS-controlled cameras to “serve as a deterrent to criminal activity and to support investigations.”

Chapel Hill Police made an arrest on Saturday associated with the kidnapping on Friday night.
