The U.S. Department of Education has named UNC-Chapel Hill as one of 55 schools in 27 states that are under investigation for violating federal civil rights laws regarding sexual harassment and assault.

The News & Observer reported that on Thursday, The Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights released the Title IX investigation list as part of a recent effort to promote more transparency in its enforcement process.

In a statement, the Department of Education also credited President Obama’s White House Task Force to Protect Students from Sexual Assault as another motivator for releasing the list.

Two North Carolina institutions of higher learning are on it: UNC-Chapel Hill, and Guilford College in Greensboro.

The Department of Education also stated that it will withhold specific details of each investigation.

However, the Department will reveal, upon request, whether alleged violations at each school have either been resolved, or dismissed for insufficient evidence at the conclusion of each investigation.

Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 bans discrimination on the basis of sex in all federally funded educational programs and activities.

UNC declined to speak to WCHL about the list, but sent the following statement in an email:

“The University applauds the efforts of the White House Task Force. We have been working with the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights since they contacted us early last year. We appreciate the transparency about enforcement efforts that the publication demonstrates.”
