RALEIGH — North Carolina lawmakers are adding the daughter of billionaire C.D. Spangler to the board overseeing the state’s 17-campus public university system.

The state Senate on Tuesday elected 52-year-old Anna Spangler Nelson to 11 months on the University of North Carolina Board of Governors. She finishes the term of pharmaceutical industry entrepreneur Fred Eshelman, who resigned almost a month ago.
Nelson graduated from public schools in Charlotte in the 1970s as the city sought peaceful racial integration. She earned an MBA from Harvard University and married fellow Harvard Business School graduate Thomas Nelson after their partnership in a Charlotte venture capital firm.
Anna Nelson is an unaffiliated voter, but her father is a registered Democrat.
C.D. Spangler guided the University of North Carolina system as its president from 1986 to 1997.
