Roadwork is closing a portion of Columbia Street during the daytime through the remainder of the year.

A release from the Town of Chapel Hill says the northbound right travel lane of South Columbia, in front of the Ackland Art Museum, and the adjacent sidewalk will be closed from nine o’clock in the morning until four o’clock in the afternoon until December 30.

The work is part of the Porthole Alley Improvements Project underway at UNC in hopes of making “significant pedestrian improvements” to the avenue connecting the campus and downtown.

A pedestrian detour has been established and officials say all affected businesses and properties on East Franklin Street will continue to have access.
