Roadwork construction is prompting flagging operations on South Greensboro Street in Carrboro through early 2017.

North Carolina Department of Transportation crews began work on Monday to replace an undersized drainpipe with a larger aluminum culvert, according to the DOT. The work will cause traffic delays on South Greensboro Street between Highway 54 and Rand Road.

“This work is necessary to address the risk of flooding of the roadway and adjacent homes and businesses,” said Division Seven engineer Mike Mills.

The roadway will remain open during construction work, according to officials, while flaggers will be working alongside traffic.

“The first phase of work is being coordinated with similar drainage upgrades being performed by the adjacent South Green development property owners which will further improve drainage in this flood-prone area,” said Division Seven assistant resident engineer Tommy Byrd.

The work is scheduled to take place from nine o’clock in the morning until four o’clock in the afternoon through Monday, January 9, 2017, weather permitting.
