CHAPEL HILL – An accident involving an overturned car carrying a child caused traffic back ups for about an hour on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. Friday morning.

Lieutenant Josh Mecimore said there were no injuries.

The two-car collision happened in front of the Chapel Hill Police Department in the 800 block of MLK.

“A vehicle was turning into a public housing complex there, and a vehicle coming behind them on MLK Southbound didn’t stop. They hit them from behind, and it rolled the vehicle that was turning into the parking lot onto its side,” Mecimore said.

Police warned commuters to use caution in the area while the accident was cleared.

“It didn’t appear that there were any injuries,” Mecimore said. “The EMS came and checked out the driver and the small child in the car that turned onto its side. The child was in its safety seat and properly restrained. It doesn’t appear to have had any injuries.”

Mecimore said the accident was cleared by 8:45 a.m.
