I-85 southbound was closed near Exit 165 for several hours on Tuesday. The accident was near NC-86. Traffic was backed up past the Durham county line.
Northbound traffic was also severely backed up, according to the Orange Rural Fire Department.
Detours were in place and as of 9 PM on Tuesday, I-85 was still closed.
According to North Carolina Highway Patrol, one passenger died in the accident. A passenger van ran off the right shoulder and struck the rear of a tractor-trailer, which was stationary at the time. Authorities say the van then collided into a Toyota pickup truck, which caused the truck to overturn.
