The commute between Hillsborough and Carrboro on Old North Carolina Highway 86 is about to get longer over the next three weeks due to an underground pipe replacement project.

According to the North Carolina Department of Transportation, a portion of that highway between Eubanks and Homestead roads will be closed while the project is completed.

Motorists traveling along Old North Carolina Highway 86 between June 19 and July 7 will be diverted onto those roads as maintenance crews lay two new pipes under the thoroughfare.

The department is advising affected drivers to watch signs for construction information, obey the posted speed limit and visit drivenc.gov for real-time travel information.
