CARRBORO – High speeds were the cause of a fatal car accident in Carrboro late Sunday night.

The car of 24-year-old David Quiroz struck a tree when he was driving upwards of 100 miles per hour. At around 11:30 p.m., the Carrboro Fire and Rescue Department responded to the intersection of Jones Ferry Road and Old Greensboro Road, which is just off N.C. 54 West.

According to an email from Carrboro Town Manager David Andrews to Mayor Mark Chilton and members of the Board of Aldermen, Quiroz’s ran through a stoplight and the vehicle launched into the air and into the woods.

Fluids from the vehicle leaked into UniversityLake before crews were able to put down absorbent materials, but OWASA was contacted to tend to the issue.

According to the Daily Tar Heel, Orange County EMS Operations Manager, Kim Woodward, said Quiroz seemingly died on impact.
