For the first time in its more than 100-year history, the North Carolina State Fair will offer beer and wine to fair goers.

Prior to this year, the NC State Fair was the only state fair in the nation to not offer alcoholic beverages.

Beer and wine can only be purchased inside the new fair grounds Public House between the hours of noon and 8:30 p.m. and will only be distributed in four four-ounce flights of beer or four 1.5 ounce flights of wine, which are exchangeable by purchase of a $10 ticket. Fair goers are limited to one ticket each.

Local breweries and wineries such as Carolina Brewery, Botanist & Barrel, Yesteryears Brewing, Fair Game Beverage Company and Mystery Brewing Company will be a part of the offerings at the fair this year.

A portion of beverage ticket profits will go toward the marketing of North Carolina’s beer and wine industries.

The fair opens at three o’clock Thursday afternoon.
