North Carolina Department of Insurance commissioner Wayne Goodwin met with executives from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina to discuss the company’s payment and enrollment problem.

The Department of Insurance announced Thursday it would be initiating “an examination” of the company to monitor compliance with statutes and regulations.

Since January 4, the department has received over 1,000 complaints from customers related to issues such as overbilling, inability to verify effective coverage, and lack of a way to pay premiums due to company system errors.

The department did not give a timetable for completion of the examination.
