CHAPEL HILL – Local author, Dr. Amy Tiemann, announced Wednesday that she is seeking appointment to the state Senate District 23 seat, formerly held by Ellie Kinnaird.

Tiemann received her PhD in Neurosciences from Stanford University in 1996. She is also an award-winning author, educator and media producer, according to her website. Her work centers on parenting, child safety, politics and culture, and she has appeared on ABC NewsThe CBS Early Show, and NBC’s Today Show.

Tiermann shared this statement on her website: “I believe we need to dedicate ourselves over the next 6-8 years to building a strong Democratic and progressive base in North Carolina: communicating our values and how we can be pro-business without creating policies that crush everyday people, recommitting ourselves to public education, protecting clean air and water, and recruiting and training the next generation of leaders. I have been working on these issues through many channels for years and I would be honored to bring my experience and insights to the North Carolina State Senate, representing the people of Orange and Chatham counties.”
