A student at Northwood High School was one of two killed in an accident while driving to school on Monday morning, authorities have confirmed.

The crash was on Highway 15-501 near Bynum in Chatham County around eight o’clock. The accident was reported to WCHL during the morning commute backing up traffic from Pittsboro into Chapel Hill.

18-year-old Yolanda Gonzalez-Saavedra, of Chapel Hill, was driving a 1999 Chevy Tahoe south on U.S. 15-501 when it traveled into the median and began to overturn, according to the Highway Patrol.

The report indicates the Tahoe then continued into the northbound lane and into the path of a sedan, which swerved to avoid a head-on collision.

The Tahoe then continued to rollover and landed on a 2008 Toyota Camry driven by 44-year-old John Wade Collins, of Pinehurst, who also died as a result of the accident.

Collins was a Lieutenant Colonel and the head of the Air Force ROTC at UNC.

45-year-old Kelly Felicia Scurlock Cross, of Sanford, was driving the other sedan. She was transported to UNC with non-life threatening injuries.

The Highway Patrol says the investigation is ongoing, and it is unclear what caused the Tahoe to travel into the median.

Wednesday is the last day of classes for Chatham County Schools and graduation is scheduled for Saturday.
