Northwood High School in Chatham County was put on lockdown Monday morning, according to county officials.

The school is located in Pittsboro. Authorities were called to the scene just before eight o’clock Monday morning for a report of “a single gunshot fired in a wooded area” near the high school, according to a release. Rumors quickly swirled on social media regarding a possible active shooter, but officials with the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office said in a release just after 9 a.m. that “any rumor of an active shooter situation on campus is false.”

Officials added that “no weapons have been found and no one on the school campus is reported injured.”

Law enforcement personnel have “conducted a secondary sweep of the school as well as buses and outlying buildings.” The wooded area near the high school is reportedly known to draw local hunters, according to authorities.

School system officials confirmed that the lockdown was lifted and the school is operating under normal conditions.
