ORANGE COUNTY – There have been as many positive rabies results this year, as there were for all of 2012… and it’s only October.

A resident discovered a rabid dead skunk with bite wounds in her yard last Thursday near Kenion Road and Highland Farm Road. Her dog discovered the dead animal. Animal Control quickly removed the skunk to have it tested.

The dog was vaccinated against rabies and will get a booster shot, as mandated by North Carolina Statute. The resident was careful, and wore gloves around the animal, but a communicable disease nurse will evaluate the risk of exposure.
