State officials have confirmed the eighth positive rabies test of 2017 in Orange County.

This case resulted from a “lethargic raccoon” that a Hillsborough resident found in her stable on October 26, according to a release.

The resident was able to move the racoon into a crate with a net and the racoon was found dead in the crate the next morning. Animal Control officers then removed the animal and conducted the rabies test.

A veterinarian with the North Carolina Department of Agriculture will now be in contact with the resident regarding any possible exposure to her livestock, but county officials say there was no exposure to pets in this scenario.

Orange County Animal Services is hosting a low-cost rabies vaccination clinic on Thursday, November 16, from 3-5 p.m. at the services facility at 1601 Eubanks Road in Chapel Hill.

Orange County received six positive rabies cases last year and 10 in 2015. Those totals are down significantly from a spike of 23 cases in 2014.
