Road construction aimed toward pedestrian safety is ongoing on Martin Luther King Junior Boulevard in Chapel Hill.

Several pedestrian crosswalks with island medians are placed along the thoroughfare in order to provide safe crossing for residents of the many apartment complexes and homes along the street. But two new crosswalks are being added at “key locations” where officials say there is “high pedestrian and transit demand.”

One new crosswalk and refuge island is being placed on MLK between Airport Drive and the Chapel Hill-Carrboro YMCA south of the Estes Drive intersection and the southern crosswalk and island is located north of Bolinwood Drive in front of the Airport Gardens Apartments.

A release says these projects are in response to requests from local residents, Chapel Hill Transit officials and employees from the YMCA and UNC.

Two-way traffic will be maintained while construction is ongoing. Daily construction is scheduled to run from nine o’clock each morning until four in the afternoon and officials expect the work to be completed by June 30, if weather permits.

The project cost of $170,000 is being funded through money allocated from bonds approved in 2015.
