Theodore (Ted) Seagroves, Jr., a long-time Chapel Hill business leader and insurance agency owner, died early Tuesday after a 2-year battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 68.

Seagroves, a Durham native, Durham High School graduate  and Vietnam veteran, owned The Seagroves Insurance Agency since 1972 after four years in the Army, serving one tour of Vietnam as an intelligence officer and tank driver.

Seagroves supported many charities and fund-raising organizations in Chapel Hill and Durham, many centered on activities at his Chapel Hill Country Club. He was well known as a supporter of UNC athletics and a personal friend of Carolina Basketball coach Roy Williams.

Seagroves is survived by his wife, Judi Godwin Seagroves, son Theodore Seagroves III (known as Pete), daughter Amy Seagroves Benton and six grandchildren; Drew, Abby and Sarah Seagroves, and Brooks, Cody and  Samantha Benton.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time, but Pete Seagroves said a Celebration of Life will be held at the Chapel Hill Country Club within a few weeks.

“His family, his business, his friends, his golf and sports were his life,” said Pete Seagroves.

Donations can be made in Ted Seagroves’ name to the Dr. Kim Scholarship Fund at UNC’s Lineberger Cancer Center.
