A former principal at Seawell and Rashkis Elementary schools has died.

Deshera Pamela Mack passed away unexpectedly on January 5 at the age of 61, according to an obituary from Burthey Funeral Service of Durham.

Mack served as an elementary school teacher in Orange County and Durham Public Schools before moving to an administrative role in Chapel Hill – Carrboro City Schools.

Mack served as principal at Seawell Elementary before moving to Rashkis Elementary when the school opened.

Mack was named CHCCS Principal of the Year three times – in 1996, 2001 and 2007. She was also named Piedmont Triad/Central Region Principal of the Year in 2007 and served as the principal representative on the North Carolina State Board of Education.

Mack retired in 2011.

Visitation will be held from six o’clock until seven o’clock the evening of Sunday, January 22, at St. Mark A.M.E. Zion Church in Durham, where she was a member for 33 years. Memorial services will follow the visitation.

A separate visitation will also be held at 11 o’clock the morning of Monday, January 23, at St. Mark A.M.E. Zion Church with a funeral service to follow.

The family is asking that, in lieu of flowers, contributions to the Deshera Mack Scholarship Fund be sent to the Chapel Hill – Carrboro Public School Foundation, P.O. Box 877, Carrboro, NC 27510.
