Sunday, September 27, PNC Arena in Raleigh will play host to the annual Triangle Heart Walk to benefit the American Heart Association.

It’s part of a national effort – there are more than 300 Heart Walks nationwide, and it’s one of the AHA’s biggest annual fundraisers. The AHA works to fight heart disease and stroke, two of the five most common causes of death in America.

The walk at PNC Arena begins at 2 pm with festivities starting at 12:30. There’s a 1-mile and a 3-mile route – and kids, strollers, and leashed dogs are all welcome.

Libbie Hough and her daughter Natalie are participating as part of a team called “Orange Opens Its Heart.” They got involved back in 2009, when Natalie went into sudden cardiac arrest at Cedar Ridge High School. Fortunately the Cedar Ridge staff was properly trained and there was an automated external defibrillator on hand, so Natalie survived – but many others aren’t so lucky. The Houghs have been working ever since to get the word out about the importance of preparedness.

Libbie Hough joined Aaron Keck on WCHL last week.

Everyone’s welcome to participate in the Triangle Heart Walk on September 27. You can help the Houghs in two other ways as well: by donating to their team page or by visiting Hot Tin Roof in Hillsborough on Monday, September 14. Libbie and Natalie Hough will be guest-bartending from 5:30-7:30 along with Kristen Smith of the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Chamber of Commerce; all the tips they collect will go to Orange Opens Its Heart.
