Paul Connell has served as WCHL’s play-by-play voice for high school football and basketball and UNC women’s and men’s soccer for the last few years. His wife, Vivian, was recently diagnosed with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease).
ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord, according to the ALS Association’s website.
As the ice bucket challenge has gone viral, the Connell family joined in. The rules of the challenge are, if you are challenged, you must dunk yourself with a bucket of ice water, or donate $100 to the cause. Many have chosen to do both. Before you take the plunge, you must also challenge someone else.
