What to do in Chapel Hill-Carrboro this weekend? There’s a lot going on.
On campus, UNC Opera is presenting a double feature: two short operas, “The Telephone” by Gian-Carlo Menotti and “Cendrillon” by Pauline Viardot. “Cendrillon” is an early-20th-century retelling of the classic Cinderella story; “The Telephone” is a 2-person show about a man who keeps getting interrupted by a ringing phone while trying to propose to his girlfriend.
Gene Galvin, the director of UNC Opera, spoke with WCHL’s Aaron Keck.
It won’t only be UNC students performing: the cast of “Cinderella” includes several kids from local elementary schools, part of an outreach program Galvin has initiated called UNCOPERA2U.
Head to Gerrard Hall on Friday and Saturday, April 8-9, at 7:30 pm to catch both shows. (There will also be a free children’s matinee show of “Cinderella” on Saturday morning.)

On Sunday, April 10, the focus shifts to Carrboro. Weaver Street will be closed to vehicles on Sunday from noon to 4 pm for an outdoor party called Carrboro Open Streets, hosted by the Carrboro Bicycle Coalition – featuring dancing, biking, yoga, rock wall climbing, smoothie making, and more. At 2:30, Carrboro Town Commons will play host to the annual CROP Hunger Walk, with hundreds of local residents walking to raise money to fight local hunger.
Get more info on the CROP Hunger Walk here, including information on how you can take part.
And also on Sunday, beginning at 1 pm, McDougle Middle School will play host to the annual Community Dinner. Started 19 years ago by Nerys Levy and Mildred “Mama Dip” Council, the Community Dinner has a simple premise: bring everyone together around a table to share a meal. It’s grown into one of the biggest events on the annual local calendar, though, and it’s won national awards.
Nerys Levy spoke about the Community Dinner with Aaron Keck on WCHL this week.
The Community Dinner is open to everyone. Tickets are just $8 for adults and $3 for children, but no one is turned away (at least until the food runs out!). Ron Stutts will MC the event, with entertainment featuring the Bouncing Bulldogs, Paperhand Puppet Intervention, and more.
