At 31 pounds, “Mr. Handsome” is severely overweight. For a housecat.

Putting North Carolina in the internet spotlight, Mr. Handsome has drawn the kind of attention to Chatham County that is normally reserved for I-40 during a snowstorm. The portly pussy has been seen in posts across reddit and Facebook over the last couple days, and the broad coverage is showing no sign of stopping.

“Due to the huge outpouring of interest from people and potential adopters, we are announcing a new adoption process for public safety reasons,” said Animal Services Director Alan Canady. “We are a small rural shelter on a narrow road. We simply could not accommodate large numbers of people arriving and parking here on Monday.”

Heavy attention is being placed on finding the hefty housecat a home, but the sheer amount of interest in the meaty mouser has forced the Chatham County Animal Shelter to revise their adoption process to something a little more stout.

Applications to adopt the corpulent kitty will be accepted from noon on Monday, July 24, until Wednesday, July 26, at 4 pm EST. A link to the application form to adopt Mr. Handsome will be posted, and instructions will be posted on the Animal Services Facebook page. News concerning the corpulent kitty will also be posted on the county webpage as it happens.

A drawing for this thickset tom will be held on Thursday, July 27, to select the winning applicant. While the selection will be random, lottery alone will not determine Mr. Handsome’s future home. The shelter will review the selected application to ensure that the person has the ability to care for a pet with major health needs.
