CHAPEL HILL – Carolina Senior Sarah Bufkin has been selected for the prestigious Mitchell Scholarship.

Bufkin was one of 12 to receive the scholarship that will provide here with tuition, accommodations, and one-year living expenses to purse graduate studies in Ireland.  Bufkin will pursue a master’s degree in moral, legal, and political philosophy at QueensUniversity in Belfast.

A cultural studies and history major, Bufkin is UNC’s third Mitchell recipient since the first class of Mitchell Scholars in 2001.

For the second year in a row, North Carolina’s Loren Shealy has been honored as the winner of the NCAA Elite 89 Award for field hockey.

The award recognizes the student-athlete with the highest overall grade point average competing at each NCAA championship site.

Shealy is a junior forward from Charlotte and is majoring in business with a perfect 4.0 GPA.

It’s the third consecutive year that a UNC field hockey player has claimed the award.

UNC announced that Dr. Atul Gawande, a celebrated surgeon and best-selling author, will deliver Carolina’s spring Commencement address.

Gawande was selected by Chancellor Folt and the University’s Commencement Speaker Selection Committee.

An accomplished, writer, surgeon, and dynamic speaker, Gawande offer audiences a unique perspective on the practice of medicine.
