It’s not your mother’s beauty pageant. (But your mother might actually be a good contestant.)

This spring, the first-ever “Lady Pearl Pageant” will take place in Durham, celebrating North Carolina women who’ve spent their lives making a difference in their communities.

Organizer Tatiana Alexander says they’re looking for contestants 55 and older. The pageant itself will take place in March – but before that, contestants will spend a month mentoring a high school senior, for at least one hour a week.

Alexander says she came up with the idea for the pageant while watching a reality show, of all things. “My hope is this pageant and mentorship program will provide a sounding board to inspire, uplift and empower both types of seniors,” she says.

Alexander spoke this week with WCHL’s Aaron Keck.

The pageant will take place on Saturday, March 19, in the Durham Arts Council’s PSI Theater. To get more information – or to become either a contestant or a mentee – visit LadyPearlLLC.com. The application deadline is Friday, January 22, but you can apply by Tuesday, December 15, for a reduced application fee.
