CHAPEL HILL – Orange County Libraries are recognizing National Library Week by kicking off a month-long fine forgiveness for all overdue items.

Until May 12, fines for overdue books, CDs, DVDs and other library materials will be waived, no matter how late.

According to library records, there are more than 750 overdue items and nearly 1,600 lost items. Items are considered lost if they are overdue by more than 30 days.

Customers may return overdue or lost items to any of the three branch locations in Hillsborough and Carrboro. Items returned in the overnight drop box are also eligible for fine forgiveness.

Fines for items returned prior to the fine-forgiveness period, as well as replacement fees for damaged materials or lost items that cannot be located, will not be waived.

In addition to giving library customers an opportunity to do some spring cleaning, staff says it will help the transition to the new library catalog system.

Habitat for Humanity of Orange County completed “A Brush with Kindness” (ABWK) home repair project in the Northside Friday.

The on-going program is an exterior home repair service that offers painting, landscaping, weather stripping, and minor repair services for low- to moderate-income homeowners. By working together with families and volunteers, this program will increase the safety, longevity, and overall appearance of homes in the Northside and Pine Knolls communities.

Students, volunteers, and residents worked Tuesday through Friday last week— painting, landscaping and repairing a deck.

On Friday afternoon, the volunteers gathered for a dedication ceremony to celebrate the project.
