News Around Town: Holiday Schedules; Hillsborough Citizens Police Academy

CHAPEL HILL – The Town of Chapel Hill Services will be operating differently this holiday weekend.

Most municipal offices will be closed Friday, March 29; there will be no curbside yard waste collection on Friday, March 29; the Orange County landfill will be open for the weekend; and there will be no change in the curbside recycling schedule.

The Orange County solid waste convenience centers will be closed Sunday, March 31. Eubanks Road and Walnut Grove Church Road locations will be open Monday, April 1.

The Chapel Hill Transit will run on a Saturday schedule. Routes CM, CW, D, FG, JN, and T will operate. The Saturday U and NU routes will not operate on Friday and Saturday. EZ Rider services will end at 6:52 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. The last schedules pick-up window will be 6:42 p.m. – 7:02 p.m. Safe Rides will run normally Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. CHT will begin its regular service schedule on Sunday, March 31.

The CH parking office will be closed for the weekend. The Wallace Deck at 150 E. Rosemary St. and the Rosemary/Columbia lot will be open. All other Town-owned lots and on-street parking meters will be free.

The Town’s Office and Maintenance Division will be closed. For emergency services call 919-968-2855.

The Chapel Hill Community Center and Plant Road administrative office will be closed. Schedules are available for Hargraves Center or Northside Gym at 919-968-2794, and Homestead Aquatic Center at 919-968-2799.

Residential garbage usually scheduled for Friday collection will now be Monday, April 1.

Residents should place rollout carts at the curb between 4:00 p.m. the day before and 7:00 a.m. the day of collection.

The Hillsborough Police Department is currently preparing for its Citizens police Academy with spots still available.

The academy consists of up to 12 candidates and lasts nine weeks beginning April 11. Participants will meet from 6:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. on Thursdays at the Community Policing Substation located in the Fairview community at 501 Rainey Ave. Candidates will have the opportunity to ride for three hours with officers during a ride-along phase.

Topics to be covered include: Uniform patrol, legal process, accident investigation and traffic orientation, criminal investigation, community services and crime prevention, drug investigation, use of force, and K-9 division.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old and an Orange County resident with no felony or misdemeanor convictions.
