CHAPEL HILL – St. Paul AME Church kicks off its celebrations of its doors opening 150 years ago on Sunday.

The African Methodist Episcopal church started in 1864 when ten African American families came together to worship under a grapevine at the corner of Merritt Mill Road and Franklin Street. The church now sits on that historic ground, but a move is in the near future.

All while St. Paul AME is celebrating its 150th birthday, the campaign for a new sanctuary and affordable housing development is underway as well.

Tune in to the WCHL Sunday Morning News to hear more on this year’s celebrations and the future of the church.
