The “Solarize” movement is coming to the Town of Hillsborough on Wednesday, with a kickoff event at Durham Tech’s Orange County campus.

The “Solarize” program is an organizing effort that brings neighborhoods together to negotiate for group discounts for solar panel installations.

The idea is: The bigger the group, the bigger the discounts. The Town of Hillsborough is offering non-monetary support to the initiative, in an effort to promote energy independence, environmental stewardship, and more construction jobs.

Support from the town government includes use of Town Hall for public educational events.

“Solarize Hillsborough” is organized by the North Carolina-based non-profit group NextClimate.

Earlier this year, the grassroots organization kicked off “Solarize Carrboro,” and there’s an ongoing online fundraising effort to “Solarize” McDougle Middle School.

The “Solarize Hillsborough” event takes place at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Room 201 of Durham Tech in Orange County.

And you are invited.
