ORANGE COUNTY – The Town of Hillsborough is recruiting volunteers for several advisory boards, including the Board of Adjustment, the Parks and Recreation Board, and the Tourism Board.

Each board meets one evening a month to discuss town issues and events relevant to each board’s category.

Your local Board of Education recently approved the hiring of Dr. Sherron Leplin as the district’s new executive director of Exceptional Children.

Leplin is currently the principal of the UNC Hospital School, which provides year-round educational services to school-age children while they are patients so they will be able to continue their schooling with as little interruption as possible.

The Exceptional Children Division aims to ensure that students with disabilities develop intellectually, physically, emotionally, and vocationally through the provision of an individualized education program in the least restrictive environment.  Dr. Leplin brings with her a well-rounded background, including previous positions as principal with Durham Public Schools and Orange County Schools, as an Exceptional Children coordinator and assistant principal with Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools.

Chapel Hill’s Obey Creek Compass Committee is continuing its work in the development of a site concept plan for the proposed Obey Creek mixed use development.

The committee was appointed by the Town Council and strives to provide information, solicit community response and foster community participation in the development of the concept plan.

The committee is scheduled to provide the Council with a report and an outline of issues this fall to be discussed, should the project move into a Development Agreement negotiation
