Mark your calendars: Chapel Hill-Carrboro’s 19th annual Community Dinner is set for April 10, 2016, at the McDougle Schools cafetorium.

Organized by artist Nerys Levy and legendary restaurateur Mildred “Mama Dip” Council, the Community Dinner is nothing more than that – a giant meal, shared by everyone in the community. (About 700 people attend each year.) It’s a very simple idea for building community togetherness, but the simplest ideas are often the best: in 2014, the Community Dinner won a national award for Cultural Diversity from the National League of Cities.

Next year’s dinner is still more than five months away, but Levy says it takes almost a year to organize – so they’re calling now for volunteers and donations to help make the 2016 Community Dinner as successful as the last 18 incarnations.

Nerys Levy joined Aaron Keck on WCHL Friday.
