DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — Police in North Carolina are expected to release their preliminary findings in the case of a teenage suspect who died while in police custody.

Authorities have said 17-year-old Jesus Huerta died from a gunshot wound to his head while handcuffed in the back seat of a patrol car on Nov. 19. Huerta had been arrested on an outstanding warrant for trespassing after his family asked police to watch for him when he walked away from home following an argument.

A news conference is scheduled for 2 p.m. EST Friday.

Police said no officer fired a weapon, and that evidence suggests Huerta somehow shot himself. Family members and friends have questioned that.

Durham Mayor Bill Bell said earlier Huerta’s family would get the report before it’s released to the public.
