CARRBORO – Carrboro native and current police captain, Walter Horton, will serve as the Town’s next police chief, as appointed by Town Manager David Andrews.

The search attracted 101 applicants from as far away as the U.S. Virgin Islands, but of the five finalists, Captain Horton was chosen as the best to succeed Chief Carolyn Hutchison, who will retire in September.

Horton started with the Carrboro Police in 1993. He spent all his years of primary education in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro district and graduated from MountOliveCollege with a bachelor’s in criminal justice. In 2001, Horton received the Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate which is given by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission. The commission is designed to reward and recognize officers who continually strive to better themselves professionally. He is also a graduate of the NC JusticeAcademy’s Management Development Program. Horton was promoted to Captain of Administrative Services in June 2011.
