Chapel Hill town manager Roger Stancil announced on Wednesday his intentions to retire next fall.

In an e-mail to the Town Council with the subject line “After 45 years, one more,” Stancil wrote that it is “never a good time for a manager to plan to retire,” but he said there were several reasons he felt this would be the best time to announce his intentions.

Stancil said he committed to serving as the town manager for five to seven years when he took that position in 2006, meaning he will have served as town manager for 12 years in September 2018.

Stancil wrote that there were several goals the council laid out that have been accomplished during his tenure, including increasing staff leadership opportunities, bettering the relationship between the town and UNC and maintaining the town’s bond rating and financial standing through the recession.

There was no clear date laid out as to when Stancil’s retirement would be effective.
