The dilapidated building on the corner of Weaver and North Greensboro streets has been vacant ever since CVS bought the building in 2013. CVS never went forward with a development proposal once it became clear their rezoning request would likely be denied.

The Carrboro Board of Aldermen has put a non-residential ordinance in place, aiming to let the town have more power over the maintenance of the building.

Mayor Lydia Lavelle said some changes had to be made before the board could approve the ordinance last Tuesday. She says some local businesses were worried about what it could mean if they owned a group of buildings, and one was empty.

“Through the definition of vacant and some other changes to the ordinance, we cleaned up some hesitations that we had from the week before,” she said.

After the changes were made, the board passed the ordinance unanimously.

Lavelle said the next steps for the ordinance are in the works. She said the town of Carrboro has reached out to CVS corporate.

“A letter has gone out to the folks who own the property at 201 N Greensboro,” she said. “Explaining to them that we’re concerned about the property and we’re going to be — our town officer, code officer is going to be looking into the property in the manner authorized by the ordinance.”

WCHL has also reached out to CVS. The company did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
