Three of the four search firms being considered by the UNC Board of Governors to conduct the search for the next President of the University System had the chance to bring ideas to the board on Wednesday.

The twelve members of the search committee heard pitches and asked questions from three search firms vying for the opportunity to find the next leader of the 17-campus UNC System.

It was announced in January that current President Tom Ross would be moved out of that position.

The interviews were conducted at the Center for School Leadership Development on Wednesday morning.

BOG Chairman John Fennebresque made it clear to each candidate if they were to be retained for this position, the board would be expecting a full-time commitment, saying he wanted this to be “the most important thing you’re working on.”

It was also clear candidates would be considered from traditional and non-traditional backgrounds, meaning from those with careers in academia and candidates from careers running companies.

The three firms interviewed on Wednesday were Russell Reynolds and Associates, R. William Funk and Associates, and Baker and Associates. Isaacson, Miller will have the chance to impress the search committee at its interview next week.

A fifth firm, SpencerStuart, dropped out of the running.

Baker and Associates conducted the 2005 search that led to the hiring of Erskine Bowles as System President, while R. William Funk and Associates led the 2010 search that found current President Tom Ross.

Four regional forums have also been scheduled by the Board of Governors inviting public input in the search for the next President. Three sessions will be held at seven o’clock next Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday on the campuses of UNC Asheville, East Carolina, and North Carolina Central, respectively. The final session is slated for June 1 at UNC Charlotte.

An online survey is also open to the public now through Friday, May 22.
